Introducing Plant-A-Tree: A free decision support tool for researchers worldwide

Are you embarking on a study to evaluate cost-effectiveness of a certain intervention but unsure how to do visualise your comparisons? Are you trying to weigh out the pros and cons of a major life decision you are about to make? Have you tried looking for modelling software online only to be disappointed by their hefty price tag?

Plant-A-Tree version 1.0 is finally here and may help you.

Plant-A-Tree is an open-source Microsoft® Excel Add-In that you can use to make decision trees for use in economic evaluations or any decision problem you are facing. Compared to other decision tree makers, Plant-A-Tree supports creation of unlimited branches (nodes) and can seamlessly add or remove branches when revising the model. This is feature is particularly useful for those still conceptualizing or visualizing their decision problem and all the possible outcomes and sources of costs. In addition, branches can easily be copied and pasted when needed to replicate nodes across multiple comparators. Lastly, Plant-A-Tree presents both costs and outcomes together in a single tree (spreadsheet), making it easy for users to compare and calculate final outcomes (e.g. incremental cost effectiveness ratios).

The Add-In was developed by the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Health Intervention and Technology Assessment Program Thailand (HITAP) with support from the International Decision Support Initiative (iDSI). It is a response to the growing needs of researchers in low- and middle-income countries where access to modelling tools is limited.

Plant-A-Tree is free and simple-to-use – try it for yourself and download now! It is currently available for Windows OS and used with Microsoft® Excel 2013 or later.
