Biography

Dr. Shankar Prinja is a Professor of Health Economics at the PGI Chandigarh. His research interests include methodological and applied research on methods of costing and cost-effectiveness analysis, as well as evaluation of health financing policies. He has contributed to various important methodological guidelines of India’s HTA agency. He has formerly served as the Executive Director at India’s National Health Authority. At the NHA, he was responsible for designing policies for health benefit package, pricing, and quality assurance of India’s national insurance scheme – Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PMJAY), as well as set up the Health Financing and Technology Assessment unit.

He has been a member of several high level technical expert groups including the subgroups of Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council on “Investment in Human Resources and Infrastructure” as well as “Converging Health Care and Social Security Financing Platforms”, member of NTAGI core committee, chairs the Vaccine Cost Effectiveness Analysis Working Group of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization, and member of the ICMR’s COVID-19 Taskforce on Operations Research.

He is a recipient of prestigious Prof MK Seshadri award & the Prof. BC Shrivastav Foundation Award by the Indian Council of Medical Research. He has also authored more than 250 research papers in leading national and international peer-reviewed scientific journals.
